Morning after the night before…

February 26, 2006

That’s it. The Laundromat launch party happened. Date one done.

What can I say? It was an absolutely amazing night.

The bad stuff:
We arrived to see that the club’s main turntable/mixer set-up was not there (it was being serviced)… The set-up that we were left with was pretty crap.
The left turntable was distorted.
There was no CDJ-1000 (as there had been before) – so no CDs to be dropped (and I had a great Kaiser Chiefs remix, too!)
Someone kept leaning on the fire exit – which tripped out the sound system. D’Oh!
I completely screwed up the first mix at 11ish (I was busy chatting when the track ended!)
No photos. If anyone took any good photos, email them and I’ll get them on the site.

The good stuff:
Despite the initial problems, it was still awesome.
Matty J did the business.
I got to open my set a la Ben Watt, with a couple of Lazy Dog classics.
I managed to sneak in some of my favourite deep house and African stuff between 11 and 12.
Rich played some blinding Electro stuff between 12 and 1 (he even opened with Alter Ego – Rocker. I salute you!).
We back-to-backed between 1 and 2, cutting between reworks of old favourites and some stuff we’ve loved from the last few years.
Rich ended it beautifully on Tom Middleton’s Drum n Bass mix of The Beloved – The Sun Rising.

Sincere thanks to everyone who came along. I’m sure to forget a load of people, but here are some thank yous to start off:

Thanks for a great night guys. I’m trying to work out which track it was that had the Clapton sample. You’ll know your tunes, but perhaps not that it was a Clapton sample. I know the Clapton sample, but not the tunes. Ahhhhh. Was awesome though.

    No problem with Mr Tong.

    Hi Rich,

There’s no way I can go home now without being tempted to read the small print on all of the labels of the records I packed (about 90) for the night.

The worst thing is that it may not even be one of the tunes I played! :) I can’t work out which is worse: It be one of the tunes I played and I didn’t realise it sampled the good Mr Clapton, or I spend 2 hours reading record labels tonight only to find it was one of Rich or Matt’s tunes.

Either way, I confess to not remembering the track. There’s only one solution: You’re going to have to sing it to me. If you’d like to send through an MP3 of your rendition, I’ll be sure to add it to the site. It’s all in the name of good, clean, family entertainment (music video optional).

Oh dear, my home made MP3 ripper is ripped. My vocal talents will continue to be confined to the shower. Besides, I can’t remember how it went- might have just been a BIG guitar riff. I’ll know it when I hear it.
I spent all the way from Portsmouth to Southampton downloading Eric Clapton previews to my 3G phone to try and find where the sample was from- then the signal dipped as we went into the New Forest and I gave up. How did we ever manage with GSM?
Then I listened to a load of tracks from Hard to Find Records htfr.com. No joy.
My next option is to narrow the search by short listing all the tracks from Clapton albums I might have listened to (bound to be a small proportion of his prolific works)… and take it from there.
So to summarise, we’re looking for a track I can’t remember on a record you might not have played. Easy peasy.

We’ve clearly got this one in the bag. But perhaps not… my bag.

You’re right. This is easy. I think that the next step for me is to fly far enough into space to pick up the sound from the start of my set (330m/s * 4 days * 24 hours * 60 mins * 60 seconds = 114048 Kilometers) – the whole vacuum of space thing may add an interesting twist – then record it, compress it and email it to your 3G phone via satellite link (remember – I’ll be in space at the time). All you need to do is listen through, identify the track and bob’s your uncle. Let’s hope it’s not a white label, eh?

The alternative is, of course, that you sing it to me. I’m still leaning towards option 2.

Aside from the now seemingly essential need for space travel, it was an awesome night. Great tunes, great bunch of people (both behind the decks and in front of..) and all in a top night. Bring on the next one!

ClickRich and I finally worked out which tune it was: Cream vs. the Hoxton Whores – Sunshine of your love… I’m also a fan of the Spanky Wilson version (which is on Tom Middleton – The Trip… Possibly one of the best ever mix CDs).
